You can find high-end 2TB SSDs that cost close to $400, but I don’t believe spending that much is necessary for most gamers.

I always try to look at things from my customers’ point of view and find the best balance between performance, reliability and price. After all, the goal is to get more storage for your PS5, not to spend money on performance that you are unlikely to notice while gaming.

That’s why I usually tell my customers not to get caught up in SSD speed numbers. A good mid-range M.2 SSD that meets or exceeds Sony’s requirements for PS5 expansion storage can already deliver excellent performance.

The PS5’s expansion slot supports PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSDs, and Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. Once you are using a good-quality SSD that meets those requirements, paying considerably more for an even faster drive doesn’t suddenly make your games load dramatically faster or make the console perform better.

In other words, you don’t need the fastest SSD you can buy. You need a good, compatible SSD at a sensible price.

My Recommendations

These are the SSDs I would personally recommend for both PS5 and PS5 Pro.

I have selected them because they offer a good combination of performance, reliability, warranty and, most importantly, price. You don’t need to spend extra money on the most expensive SSD just to get excellent performance from your console.

These are the drives I would be comfortable recommending to my own customers.

“Game Gear” is supported by its audience. It comes from a well-established storage manufacturer, offers more than enough performance for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

The 2TB model can reach up to 7,100 MB/s sequential read speeds, which is comfortably above Sony’s recommended 5,500 MB/s for PS5 expansion storage. You are getting plenty of performance without paying the premium that comes with some of the high-end gaming SSDs.

For me, that’s what makes the SN5100 interesting. You’re not buying it because it has the highest benchmark numbers. You’re buying it because it gives you 2TB of fast, reliable storage from a reputable brand at a sensible price.

If you find the 2TB SN5100 at a good price, this is one of the drives I would have no problem recommending to my clients.

Crucial P310 2TB SSD

The Crucial P310 2TB is another SSD I would happily recommend to PS5 and PS5 Pro owners.

It offers up to 7,100 MB/s read speeds, so it comfortably meets what I look for in a PS5 upgrade. But more importantly, the P310 has consistently been one of the drives I consider when looking for a good balance between capacity, performance and price.

For someone who simply wants to add 2TB of internal storage to their PS5 without spending money on an expensive flagship SSD, the P310 is a very sensible choice.

Just make sure you get the heatsink version.

Key factors

Well, there are a few things I look at before I recommend an SSD to my customers:

1. It must meet the PS5’s storage upgrade requirements

This is the first and most important point. I only recommend SSDs that meet Sony’s requirements for PS5 and PS5 Pro storage expansion. There is no reason to take a chance on an SSD that doesn’t meet the console’s specifications.

2. A reputable and proven brand

I prefer brands that have a proven track record in the SSD market. There are plenty of extremely cheap drives from unknown manufacturers, but saving a little money isn’t worth the risk of questionable quality, inconsistent performance or poor warranty support.

3. A reasonable price

I don’t believe gamers should spend a fortune on an SSD just to get the highest numbers on the box. My goal is to find a drive that gives you the storage capacity and performance you actually need without unnecessarily hurting your wallet.

4. At least a 5-year limited warranty

I generally prefer SSDs backed by a 5-year limited warranty. A longer warranty is a good indication that the manufacturer has confidence in the drive and is willing to stand behind it for several years. Of course, warranty length isn’t the only thing I consider, but I do consider it an important factor.

When anyone comes to my shop and asks me about upgrading the SSD in their PS5 or PS5 Pro, I don’t automatically recommend the most expensive SSD on the market.
